Gomer Pyle. I Love Lucy. Gilligan’s Island. These three shows together probably consumed more hours of my youth than any other pass time. (Yeah, I know that probably explains things…) What can I say? Gomer Pyle.
I Love Lucy.
Gilligan’s Island.

These three shows together probably consumed more hours of my youth than any other pass time. (Yeah, I know that probably explains things…)

What can I say? They still make me laugh.

Did you know that the Skipper’s name was Jonas Grumby?
Did you know that the show was filmed next to a highway in California?
Did you know that Gilligan made a guest appearance on Alf?

But have you ever stopped to think what makes shows like this a success?

It’s not just the comedic brilliance of the actors.

It’s because they all masterfully used the art of storytelling.

They cultivated colorful, lovable characters and placed them in situations that you couldn’t help but enjoy.

And guess what?

Both your personal branding and business marketing have to do the same.

What’s your story? Is it funny? inspiring? touching?

If you’re not sure, then you’re missing out on one of the most powerful (and economical) weapons in your marketing arsenal.

So, here’s what I want you to do – click this link.

And let’s work together for a couple of hours writing your story. We’ll split the time up in as many sessions as we need, and in the end you’ll have a compelling story you can leverage for years.

What ya think lil’ buddy?

Apple pie?
“Baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet…” According to the song, nothing is more American, right? Except that baseball was invented in Britain! In fact, the first recorded game of baseball was in 1749 in Surrey, England. The prince was one of the players! The first known reference to baseball in America was in 1791, forty-two years […]

“Teach don’t sell.” This is one of the most abused catch phrases of the day. While there is some truth to it, often it can become a mortal trap for lots of professionals. Let me explain. A couple of days ago I was talking with a friend of mine. He’s a smart, experienced guy with […]

The Round Man
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my grandpa. James Franklin Dew, Jr. was the son of a Souther Baptist revival preacher. He was a poet, an avid reader of cowboy novels and sharp bridge player. He was affectionately known by all as “The Round Man”. I remember how he told me stories about growing […]

Over the years I’ve learned the power of being consistent. Religiously I send you an email every morning – come rain or shine. At the very least this silently communicates to you two important qualities. First, that I care enough about you to keep up with it. And second, that I’m consistent about the work […]

Flash News: Talented Marketer Almost Devoured by Hungry Alligators
It all started with a duck. A duck who had no intention of being an afternoon snack. For Skyh. Yes, the same happy pit bull puppy that dislocated my elbow a couple of months ago. But back to the story. We were enjoying our everyday walk in the park. The dogs were playing with their […]

Give me the no!
Can you imagine anything more refreshing? It’s kind of like running barefoot through the sprinkler on a hot summer afternoon. What? I’m talking about getting a nice clear no. I don’t know about you, but all that wishy-washy “I’ve got to think about it” and “I’m just not ready” or “Could you give me a […]

5 Basics You Should Be Ashamed About Not Doing
Red in the face. Looking down at your toes. Hands squeezed tightly under your arms. Ashamed. Embarrassed. Sheepish. Mortified. These are the adjectives you deserve if you haven’t taken care of these 5 basic marketing tasks. I don’t care if you’re just trying to build up your personal brand or are running a billion dollar […]

Are your kids in danger?
You opened this email. You practically didn’t have a choice. Why? Because I used one of the most powerful questions imaginable. A question that speaks to the most primitive, deep-in-your-gut part of your anatomy – your reptilian brain. As a father, I don’t take this lightly. Believe me, I’m not trying to trick you or […]

Who Wrote Your Website?
Stop. This is perhaps the most important question you need to answer. Who wrote your website? Was it your web designer? I hope not. Was it your grandma? God forbid. Was it you? Hmmm… You see, nothing – and I mean nothing – is more important to your digital marketing strategy than the words on […]

Alternative Dollars?
“The best books… are those that tell you what you know already.” George Orwell, 1984 Here’s a question for you: Can you take “alternative dollars” to the bank? Over the last few weeks I’ve been thinking about the past election, from a marketer’s point of view. Not just because it worries me, but because I […]

This one’s gonna hurt. And I don’t mean just like an itchy red spot behind your right knee. Nope, when you’re finished reading this email you’re likely to be totally pissed off at me. Why? Because I want you to honestly evaluate your website. Is that the first impression you REALLY want to make? Are […]

Two dastardly machines
They’re the worst. Fifty years and I still can’t use them. Maybe it’s heredetary? What am I talking about? The two most evil, jinxed concoctions ever built by man – and one was invented my Leonardo da Vinci! Yeah, I’m talking about scissors and photocopiers. What’s with these things? Every time I pick up a […]

I’ve been dying to use this metaphor. But you’ll have to wait. It just won’t be as good if it’s not in context. So, bear with me and be patient. You see, just last week I was talking with a customer, partner and friend of mine about her business. And she was explaining to me […]

A copywriter’s sunset
A new voice. Last Friday, our nation began speaking with a new voice. As a marketer, these things matter to me. In fact, it never ceases to amaze me how powerful words can be. Words can move you to tears. Words can conquer disease and injustice. And yes, words can take lives mercilessly. But never […]

Should you cuss in emails?
I knew it would happen. Yeah, I saw it comin’ Yesterday’s email got me a few unsubscribes and pissed off replies! Why? Because my language got a tad bit “colorful”. One reader asked, “do you really have to cuss in your emails? It only makes you look unprofessional.” Oh give me a break, will ya’! […]

Only For the Heroes!
Yesterday was for the wimps. The timid ones. The slow and cautious ones. The not quite convinced about online marketing. Why? Because… […]

You may have noticed this too. Although you probably haven’t given it a lot of thought. After all, you’ve got better things to do than ponder the trivial little mysteries of the universe, right? But here’s the deal. I realized that the world is divided up into two groups of people: The “toe moisteners” and […]

Culture is a weird thing. Did you know that Donald Duck comics were once banned in Finland because he wasn’t wearing pants? And this from the country that loves their nude saunas!
